Al tener una computadora portátil Asus similar, tuve el mismo problema con wifi y utilicé esta solución de suspensión de la sesión y es bastante molesto tener que suspenderla cada vez.

Para mi ASUS R704V con Ubuntu 13.10, ninguna de las propuestas anteriores funcionó. Aparentemente, los controladores del kernel y el hardware no están de acuerdo con el significado de los niveles lógicos "0" y "1" como "bloqueados" y "no bloqueados".
